EXTRACTION SITE
The emerald-rich province of northern Bahia has been producing emeralds since the 1960s. It is there, at the contact between ultrabasic rocks and pegmatites, that beryllium meets chromium, giving the stone its color. The extraction was legal, with documentary records of origin, legality of mining, environmental authorization, and chain of transfers, available for investigation under confidentiality.

MINERAL IMPORTANCE
Scale
Crystals of this size usually fracture during formation or mining. Surviving intact in half a ton of matrix is an exception.
Preserved matrix
The stone was not separated from the rock that formed it, which preserves the geological information that a loose crystal loses.

Inclusions and growth zones record the conditions of the Paleoproterozoic era, which is of interest to museums and universities.
